AfroPedagogy
What makes AfroEnglish unique, in addition to its vanguard vision and outlook, is its pedagogical approach to language acquisition. AfroEnglish uses what is commonly referred to as afropedagogy to facilitate the English language acquisition process for persons of African descent. To be clear, afropedagogy, alternatively referred to as afrocentric or africana pedagogy, is not what is commonly thought of as “black English.” This is to say that it is not predicated upon, nor related to, any type of black English vernacular, slang or any particular dialect that is used primarily among people of African descent.
Afropedagogy is, at its very essence, a methodology that connects the larger black world to personal experiences which provide examples of black potential and excellence. It is the creative use of the Black diasporic experience to not only educate, but to inspire and positively transform the lives of black people. Thus, it is a pedagogical approach through which the aforementioned is accomplished via the English language acquisition process and, as such, is not limited to the study of English, or any language for that matter, but can equally be applied to virtually any field of study or endeavor.
People of African descent are spread out all over the world. They speak a variety of languages and possess diverse cultural backgrounds and traditions. Despite the aforementioned divergencies, they also share many commonalities that transcend geographical boundaries. Hence, afropedagogy is an African centered pedagogical approach that, above all, acknowledges the intrinsic humanity of African people and explores these divergencies and similarities which are universal in scope and, in so doing, greatly facilitate African descendant populations reach their full human potential.
AfroEnglish is a website dedicated to the learning of English through the use of various modalities and approaches that are experiential, expressive, constructive, collaborative and culturally, socially and politically relevant to people of African descent. AfroEnglish has a global outlook and the expressed mission of revolutionizing English language learning for people of African descent throughout the African diaspora.
O que torna o AfroEnglish único, além de sua visão e perspectiva de vanguarda, é sua abordagem pedagógica para a aquisição da linguagem. O AfroEnglish usa o que é comumente referido como afropedagogia para facilitar o processo de aquisição do idioma inglês para pessoas de ascendência africana. Para ser claro, a afropedagogia, também chamada de pedagogia afrocêntrica ou africana, não é o que geralmente se pensa como "inglês negro". Isso quer dizer que não se baseia, nem se relaciona a, qualquer tipo de vernáculo inglês preto, gíria ou qualquer dialeto específico usado principalmente entre pessoas de ascendência africana.
Afropedagogia é, em sua essência, uma metodologia que conecta o mundo negro maior a experiências pessoais que fornecem exemplos de potencial e excelência negros. É o uso criativo da experiência diaspórica negra não apenas para educar, mas para inspirar e transformar positivamente a vida dos negros. Portanto, é uma abordagem pedagógica através da qual o mencionado é realizado através do processo de aquisição da língua inglesa e, como tal, não se limita ao estudo do inglês ou de qualquer outra língua, mas pode igualmente ser aplicado a praticamente qualquer campo de estuda ou empreender.
Pessoas de ascendência africana estão espalhadas por todo o mundo. Eles falam uma variedade de idiomas e possuem diversas origens e tradições culturais. Apesar das divergências acima mencionadas, elas também compartilham muitos pontos em comum que transcendem as fronteiras geográficas. Portanto, a afropedagogia é uma abordagem pedagógica centrada na África que, acima de tudo, reconhece a humanidade intrínseca do povo africano e explora essas divergências e semelhanças que são universais em escopo e, ao fazê-lo, facilitam muito as populações afrodescendentes atingirem todo o seu potencial humano.

With over 20 years teaching experience, 20 years specifically in the area of English as a Second Language, Shawn, born and raised in Los Angeles, California, decided to start AfroEnglish based upon his past teaching experiences working with black and Hispanic adolescents and adults in Los Angeles Unified School District and becoming acutely aware of the many unique challenges that they faced due to their socio economic status and cultural backgrounds. As a consequence, he began providing his students personalized English as a Second Language and TOEFL iBT classes that were culturally based and contextualized the English language learning process through socially meaningful lessons that were relevant to the lives of his students. He discovered that this approach not only greatly increased the overall interest level of his students in the English language materials presented in his classes, but that it also substantially expedited the language acquisition process as many of his students were able to make rapid gains in their reading, writing, listening and conversational abilities. This approach proved to be a pivotal turning point in his ESL pedagogy and ultimately served as the foundation for what would later become AfroEnglish.
Shawn specializes in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and has created his own E-Learning English language acquisition software for TOEFL iBT preparation and general English as a Second Language learning. He is supremely confident that he can help anyone desiring to improve their English language fluency or overall score on the TOEFL iBT reading, writing, listening and speaking sections. Ironically, many test preparation ESL instructors have never taken an English proficiency test like the TOEFL iBT. Shawn has taken the International Test for English Proficiency (ITEP Academic Plus – see PDF download for test scores), which is similar to the TOEFL iBT, and, as a consequence, he is intimately familiar with the structure of English proficiency tests and how to prepare students to obtain a successful score.
